VFA-106 Gladiators
Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS)
Experience Required…
As Virtual CVW-8 has continued to define and refine our brand, we have come to the realization that we are not the best fit for pilots just beginning their DCS Hornet experience. Because the Wing strives for standardization and TTP adherence with a high focus on tactical execution, there is a need to spend a greater amount of time in Phase I and II of the FRTP, working to hone those skills and create the fighting team that will be required to be successful during our deployments. We will no longer dedicate months of time to Phase 0 FRS training operations and therefore prospective pilots will need to already possess a baseline of proficiency in flying the Hornet at the field and around the ship in accordance with CV NATOPS procedures.
This means that the mission of VFA-106 is shifting from a Cat I focused training squadron to a Cat Other focused training squadron. Flights in the FRS will now focus on exposing prospective pilots to the Virtual CVW-8 SOP and the particular way we operate. Prospective gains can expect anywhere between 4-8 flights in the FRS reviewing SOP items and ensuring a strong working knowledge of Case I/II/III operations. Tactical Formation (TACFORM) and Offensive and Defensive Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM) will also be covered, along with an introduction to Section Engaged Maneuvering (SEM).
The FRS syllabus will be completed with a Carrier Qualification evolution where prospective pilots must conduct six landings at the ship, four of which must be arrested. A minimum GPA of 2.75 as graded by a qualified Virtual CVW-8 LSO is required. Following a successful CQ, prospective pilots will be assigned to their Fleet squadron for continued tactical training in accordance with the Strike Fighter Weapons and Tactics training program.
